One thing Saline County residents can count on as the Fourth approaches is the Lake Norrell celebration.
The ninth annual Fourth of July Celebration will begin with a cookout at 6 p.m. Friday, July 3, at the Lake Norrell Community Center. Activities will continue on Saturday with a contest and parade, and events will conclude with a fireworks display. Mandi Shepard Harper of Benton will provide musical entertainment at the cookout. She recently toured with Wildwood Park’s Opera To Go in Little Rock. She plans to sing many favorite patriotic songs. The menu will be hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, cake, ice cream and drinks. Cost is $10 for adults and $6 for kids. The Man and Woman of the year will be announced that evening. A live auction also will take place, organizer Barbara Howell said. Howell is serves on the Quorum Court as the Lake Norrell justice of the peace. Lake Norrell residents John and Phyllis Saugey and Betty and Terry Saugey of Saugey Auctions in Little Rock are the auctioneers. The event is held every year to raise money for the Lake Norrell fireworks display, Howell said. “Joann Wilkerson and Brenda Harper have decorated inside and outside the community center with red, white and blue,” Howell noted. “It is very patriotic looking.” In addition, she said, Barbara Mosley and her sister, Teresa Bagley, both of Lake Norrell, will sell Lake Norrell T-shirts and hats. On the Fourth, the Dock and Deck contest will be held at 2 p.m. Judges ride around in boats and give trophies to the docks and decks that are decorated with patriotic decorations, Howell said. At 4 p.m., the boat parade will take place. The boats are judged in two categories: Most patriotic and best-themed. Later in the day, at 9 p.m., the public fireworks display will go off. “Many boats sit in anticipation of the wonderful fireworks display along with people on their boat docks and anyone else that want to watch,” Howell said. “The Lake Norrell board has worked for many months on this,” she noted.
