County will hold auction Thursday of drug property E-mail
Wednesday, 01 July 2009
A public auction of drug-seized property in Saline County will be held Thursday.
The auction starts at 7 p.m. at Perry Appling’s Auctions, 22095 Interstate 30 in Bryant, Prosecuting Attorney Ken Casady said.
Items to be auctioned include 14 vehicles, including a “loaded” 2005 Chrysler 300 and a 1978 Chevrolet Corvette; flat-screen televisions; DVD players; and other property.
Property will go to the highest bidder, Casady said. Proceeds will be distributed to local law enforcement agencies to be used for such things as training, equipment and the purchase of canine officers.
“This auction is the largest number of vehicles and the widest variety of other property that has been auctioned recently by the prosecutor’s office,” Casady said.
By state law, vehicles used by traffickers to transport narcotics and other property traceable as proceeds of the sale of narcotics may be seized and auctioned.
“This is an effective tool to diminish the ability of criminals to bring drugs into our community and I appreciate the hard work that our law enforcement agencies are doing out there to make our streets, schools and neighborhoods safe,” Casady said.
