Witham second Senate hopeful E-mail
Thursday, 02 July 2009
Todd Witham, a political newcomer, is the second person in as many days to announce as a Democratic candidate for the Arkansas Senate District 22 seat.
Witham, 44, officially announced Wednesday. He held a pre-announcement event at his west Little Rock residence on Tuesday.
The small business owner and former Marine will seek the seat held by Sen. Shane Broadway, D-Bryant, who will be term-limited after 2010.
On Tuesday, state Rep. Dawn Creekmore, D-Bauxite, formally announced her candidacy for the Senate seat.
State Rep. Dan Greenberg, R-Little Rock, is expected to announce as a candidate later this year, and former state Rep. Jeremy Hutchinson, a Republican from Little Rock, has been rumored as a candidate.
Witham is a graduate of Benton High School. He said he has family and friends in Benton and Saline County.
“I’ve called this area home my entire life,” he said, “and I appreciate the diversities that exist within our communities.
“However, all of us want to see new economic opportunities to ensure that our children get the best education to and to have access to the best health care.”
Witham and his wife, Carol, own Woodland International Research Group and Inspiration Day Treatment Inc. They have satellite offices in Springdale.
Woodland is a medical research treatment facility and Inspiration is a mental illness treatment facility, according to the Withams.
Todd Witham said his experience in health care and as a business owner “give me insight and understanding into the complex issues facing our communities.”
“We’ve made great strides in improving health care and education,” he said, “and we have done well at attracting new jobs and economic development. But we can always do better.”
The Withams have two sons, Corbin and Luke.
