Monday, 06 July 2009
Two people lost their lives and one person is in critical condition as a result of July 4th weekend traffic accidents in Saline County, according to Arkansas State Police fatal crash summaries.
Jonathan D. Johnson, 24, of 17779 Arkansas 298 in Benton died in a single-vehicle accident just after 9 p.m. on Saturday.
Debra A. Chambliss, 46, of Hot Springs Village also died died in a single-vehicle accident just before 8 a.m. on Sunday. A passenger, Charles D. Chambliss, 15, also of Hot Springs Village, was injured in the crash.
According to accident reports, Charles Chambliss was taken to University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, where he is reported to be in critical condition. The reports noted that both Debra Chambliss and Charles Chambliss were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.
Johnson reportedly was southbound on Arkansas 9, driving at a high rate of speed, when he lost control of a 1992 Dodge truck and struck the Alum Fork bridge. State police said Johnson tried to turn in a curve when he hit the bridge abutment and flipped the truck over the structure. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Saline County Coroner Will Bearden.
Johnson reportedly was not wearing a seat belt.
At 7:47 a.m., Debra Chambliss was southbound on Arkansas 5 near the Arkansas 9 intersection, when her 2005 Ford Taurus struck a tree. The report noted that Chambliss failed to negotiate a curve and pointed out that the roadway was wet.
