Faced with many difficult challenges and decisions, and many parents admit they don’t always know how to give advice when it is needed.
To help parents learn more about the problems their children face, the Arkansas Department of Health will host a Parent Institute tonight from 6 to 9 p.m. in the health education building at Saline Memorial Hospital in Benton. Youth are also welcome to attend the event. Janice Ray, director of the event, said the idea developed after a parent from Bryant told her “’We’re having communication issues with the younger generation.’” Ray said the goal of the institute is to educate parents about issues in their children’s lives to help them become more empowered when dealing with those issues. “There are barriers to success in our youth’s life. Even if it involves getting more involved seriously, I want to empower parents to take charge,” Ray said. Speakers from various municipal agencies across the county will give 15 minute presentations. Speakers include Tamara Gore from the office of the county coroner, Circuit Judge Bobby McCallister, Dr. Michael Pafford, Rep. Barbara Nix and Benton Police Chief Kirk Lane. Detective Kevin Cooper of the Saline County Sheriff’s Office will host the adult only section of the class. Anyone interested in attending the event is asked to RSVP to Ray at 772-0752.
