A Saline County man accused of kidnapping, raping and threatening the life of his wife has pleaded not guilty to numerous charges at Benton District Court on Tuesday.
A jury trial has been set for 9 a.m. Monday in Saline County Circuit Court for Joshua Paul Hanke, 24, of Benton. Judge Gary Arnold will preside over the trial. Hanke faces charges of kidnapping, rape, aggravated assault, terroristic threatening and fleeing on foot. According to the Saline County Sheriff’s Office, Joshua Hanke remains in the Saline County jail on a $1 million sheriff’s bond; he is the son of Saline County Justice of the Peace Kim Hanke. On Sept. 24, just after 3 p.m., Alisha Hanke called 911 and reported that her husband said he was going to kill her and dumped her in the woods somewhere along Fairplay Road in Benton. She told dispatch that she did not know where he was going or where she was, but she remembered passing Fairplay Baptist Church. Alisha Hanke also said her husband had a weapon in the truck, but then she lost contact with police because her cell phone battery died. Deputy Justin Stuart and Constable Donnie Tolland responded to several homes and buildings in the area, including the home of Kim Hanke, who reportedly told officers he was also unable to get in touch with Joshua Hanke. In the report, Kim Hanke also told officers that if Joshua Hanke was approached by officers, he could become violent and/or reckless and feared officers might have to use deadly force. Stuart said during the conversation Kim Hanke reportedly received a call from Alisha Hanke’s father, who said Joshua Hanke’s truck was located on Black Stone Road, behind Kim Hanke’s property. Stuart and Tolland found the truck empty and saw a large knife inside. After disabling the truck, and securing the area, more officers and a K-9 unit was called to the scene. Tolland reportedly found both Joshua and Alisha Hanke minutes later and took Joshua Hanke into custody. The report said as Stuart was responding to Tolland, Joshua Hanke broke free and ran back into the woods while still handcuffed. Joshua Hanke was later found at Kim Hanke’s home and was taken back into custody. On Tuesday, attorney Justin Eisley of Benton pleaded not guilty to the charges on behalf of Joshua Hanke before Benton District Judge Mike Robinson.
