In addition to outscoring all of the schools in that division, the Benton cheerleaders scored the highest of the 72 schools competing in all classifications at the state championship meet Saturday at Summit Arena in Hot Springs. Karen Hilborn, coach of the squad, said the squad members were excited to learn Saturday that they had won the top honor, but the victory was even more special when they learned that they had outscored all of the squads competing in the event. That information was revealed Monday when all of the schools’ scores were posted, Hilborn said. “This is really exciting,” she said. “This means that our senior group has won the state championship all of the three years they’ve been on the squad,” she said. The team includes 20 cheerleaders and a manager, Hilborn noted. This has been a successful year for the Benton cheerleaders, Hilborn noted. Other awards the Benton cheerleaders have received this year include placing first overall in the Arkansas Cheer Coaches Association Competition and placing first in the 6A division. Both stunt groups of the squad tied for first place in stunts, Hilborn noted.
