Despite a tough economic year, Saline County was able to create a 2010 budget similar to the 2009 budget, rounding out at nearly $29 million.
District 13 Justice of the Peace Tom Lish said the 2010 budget is “so close” to the 2009 budget. “The only change, and we’re all very sorry about that ... is we were not able to do an employee pay raise at this time,” Lish said. “That is a change that all of us regret and were very cognitive of. After the first quarter, we’ll look at the budget and then see what we can do,” he added. Each county department created its budget and submitted it to the Finance/Personnel committee. Once the budgets were submitted, the departments were allowed to ask for adjustments to their created budget. Very few adjustments were added, including requests from the Saline County Health Department and the Geographical Information Systems Department. “You hate to refuse most of them. Very few of (the departments) come in with anything frivolous,” Lish said. “But, you only have so much money. You have to get the A’s, B’s and C’s before you can get down to the Z’s. Most of the elected officials I’ve spoken with have said that they are pleased with the amount they were given,” he added. The budget is divided into various funds, including the county general fund set at $13.5 million. Under the county general fund, the highest budget recipients include; the Saline County Sheriff’s Office at $3 million, the county jail supplement at $1.5 million and the 911 Communications department at $640,000 Some of the other funds include the library fund, which is set at $2.2 million, the road department set at $5.3 million and the county jail set at $2.2 million. The complete budget is available in the county clerk’s office in the Saline County Courthouse Complex.
