The Courier has won the Arkansas Education Association’s School Bell Award for the second consecutive year.
The statewide award is presented “for outstanding coverage of education” during the past year, Daniel Marzoni, AEA president, said. The Courier is one of two award winners in Arkansas for 2007. The other is the Woodruff County Monitor at McCrory. Media outlets in the statee are nominated for the award by AEA members. Award winners are chosen by an AEA committee. The Courier was nominated this year by Clark T. Hopper of the Benton Association Support Staff (BASS). This year’s award stems in large part from coverage last year of custodial issues in the Benton School District. The coverage was provided by Lynda Hollenbeck, Courier associate editor. “Winning this award in 2006 was a very humbling honor,” Whit Jones, Courier editor, said. “To win this award in consecutive years truly is an honor. We feel privileged to receive this recognition.” The 2007 award will be presented Friday night during an AEA meeting at the Wyndham Hotel-Riverfront in North Little Rock. Last year’s School Bell Award winners were the Courier, KASU radio at Jonesboro and The Daily World at Helena-West Helena. Barbara Nix, president of the Benton Education Association, nominated the Courier in 2006.
