The Benton Police Department’s SWAT and Hostage Negotiation teams were called to a armed standoff early Sunday morning, but it ended relatively peacefully when the suspect, Kenneth Ballard, 41, of Benton, was arrested by authorities, police said this morning.
Ballard, now at the Saline County Detention Center, is charged with two counts of domestic battery, two counts of domestic assault, hampering with emergency communications and obstructing governmental operations. Around midnight Sunday morning, Benton residents Jerri Ballard, 42, and Alicia Cruz, 20, called police, reporting that Kenneth Ballard was threatening their lives and hitting them. Jerri Ballard was formerly married to Kenneth Ballard but still resides with him at 1620 Huntley Drive, apartment C, and Cruz is the daughter of Jerri from a former marriage, police said. Jerri Ballard and Cruz tried to escape from Kenneth Ballard by locking themselves in a bedroom, but he tore down the door to get to the women. While the women called the police, he tried to take the phone from them, officials said. When police arrived, they found Kenneth Ballard locked in his bedroom with two pistols and refusing to come out. He repeatedly told police to “get the f*** out of this house,” the police report states. He then said, “I haven’t done anything wrong. This is the last time I’m telling you. You’ve been warned.” The police then called in the Benton SWAT team and hostage negotatiors, who were able to get the subject to leave the room by 2 a.m. The subject was taken into custody with the help of a Taser gun and taken to the county jail, police said. Ballard was still in custody this morning. His bond had not been set as of press time.
