Justices amend uniform policy E-mail
Wednesday, 21 February 2007
The Saline County Quorum Court amended the uniform allowance policy for the sheriff’s office at its regular monthly meeting Tuesday night at the Saline County Courthouse in Benton.     The new policy will provide new employees to Sheriff Phil Mask’s department with immediate access to $1,000 by purchase order for uniforms and equipment and must be spent within the first 60 days of their employment. Under the previous policy, new employees did not receive the initial $1,000 for uniforms and equipment until they had been employed.
    All law enforcement personnel will continue to receive $250 every six months for purchase/maintenance as  taxable income in the first pay period in January and July. Personnel hired in January shall not receive their first maintenance check until July.
    The policy does not apply to detention officers, who will be provided with uniforms deemed necessary by jail administrators with the approval of the Quorum Court.
    County Judge Lanny Fite announced that the Jail Committee of the Quorum Court will meet with Mask and Lt. Hugh Gentry, jail supervisor, at noon Thursday at the Saline County Detention Center to discuss Mask’s request to the court’s Finance Committee for eight additional jailers. Mask and Gentry say they need the additional manpower because of jail regulations and requirements of the new jail’s layout and booking procedures.
    Members of the Jail Committee are chairman Owen Bullock, Mark Kizer, Barbara Howell, Sharon Riggan and Jerry Landreth.
    In other business, justices of the peace passed an ordinance adding parts of Granger Williams Road, Austin Avenue, Pear Tree Drive and two parts of Plantation Drive to the county road system. A separate ordinance was passed designating Westcliffe Drive, South Silverthorne Drive, North Silverthorne Drive, Somerset Cove and Vail Cove in the county as private roads.
    The JPs also:
    • Reappointed Betty English, Lynn Hart and retired Maj. Gen. Thomas B. Arwood to the Saline County Veterans Board;
    • Appointed James Wilder to replace Thomas R. Speer on the Northeast Saline County Fire Improvement District Board;
    • Appointed Louise Davis to replace J.R. Walter as a member of the Northeast Saline County Fire Improvement District Board;
    • Approved on ordinance transferring $4,000 from the county general fund to the circuit clerk’s office; and
    • Approved an ordinance transferring $5,000 from the county general fund to the county assessor’s office for machinery and equipment.
    The justices also approved a first reading of an ordinance that would add parts of Skyline Drive, Kerr Road, Williver Road, A Dancer Cove, Blackwell Road and Rocky Mountain Drive to the county road system.
