Benton code enforcement officers plan to be out in full force in October.
The "Fall into Compliance" campaign is being conducted during National Code Enforcement Month in an effort to educate the public on code enforcement-related issues. "This is a campaign the code enforcement division hopes will educate the public on issues that will help keep the city clean the whole year through," officer Bobby Shell said. Beginning Monday, code enforcement officers will perform neighborhood walks. They will look for such things as inoperable or abandoned vehicles, trash, tall grass over 8 inches high, stagnant water, graffiti and the illegal burning of trash. Officers also will be on the lookout for the open storage of appliances or furniture, illegal dumping on land and waterways, dead trees and building materials being stored fewer than 18 inches off the ground. They also will be observant of anybody possibly stealing electricity through meter tampering. The fines for these violations can be as high as $500 a day. Each day past the violation time frame constitutes a separate offense. Benton animal control officers will work alongside code enforcement officers during the campaign. They will be look for violations concerning many species of animal and the conditions in which they live. The code enforcement office may be reached by calling 776-5965 for additional information.
