J. BRETT HOOTON announc-ed today that he will seek the Arkansas House of Representatives District 29 seat.
Republican J. Brett Hooton of Bryant, a social and fiscal conservative, said today that he will seek the Arkansas House of Representatives District 29 seat next year.
The seat is currently held by Rep. Janet Johnson, a Democrat from Bryant.
Johnson, 60, is in her third term and began serving in 2003. She cannot seek another term because of the state’s term-limits law.
Hooton, a 2001 graduate of Bryant High School, has been employed with Acxiom Corp. since July 2006.
His mother, Leigh Hooton, is a teacher at Springhill Elementary School in the Bryant School District.
Johnson is a social studies teacher at Bryant High School.
Hooton said he’s running for the Legislature “because we need a person to represent us who doesn’t simply tell us what we need, but someone who will listen.”
He said he “will meet and listen to individuals and families from across the district. I want to hear what they feel we need in order to provide a better state and community for our families.”
District 29 includes Bryant, part of Salem and part of Saline County east of Benton and Haskell.
“It is important that we have a representative who represents the views and values of the citizens of this district,” Hooton said.
“As a social and fiscal conservative, I believe I am the right choice. I will work diligently to provide the type of leadership that is needed in our community.”
Hooton, the son of Dickie Hooton, served as an intern for former U.S. Sen. Tim Hutchinson of Arkansas and worked on the campaign of Republican Chuck Banks when he ran for lieutenant governor.
Hooton holds a pair of bachelor’s degrees from Arkansas Tech University at Russellville, where he graduated in 2006. He has degrees in science in economics and history/political science.
He has established a campaign Web site, www.hootonforstaterep.com.
