Virgil (Bud) O. Shelton

Virgil (Bud) O. Shelton, 73, of Benton, passed away Friday, August 5.  He was born June 26, 1938 in Benton, to the late Virgil Henry and Nellie Marie Shelton. 

He retired from Alcoa and was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Shelton was a U.S. Marine serving in the Korean War and the Bay of Pigs.The following newspaper account described the latter experience: 

"Marine Lance Corporal Virgil O. Shelton, son of Virgil H. Shelton of Benton, returned with a unit of the Second Marine Corps Air Station at Beaufort, S. C., Nov. 30, from Florida, where it had been deployed since late October.
  "The unit, part of the forces called during the quarantine of Cuba, was based at Key West, Florida. On November 26, President Kennedy visited units based at Key West and Commented:
  “The work you have done has contributed as much to the security of the United States as any group of men in history. Your tour was a most dangerous one. Upon  you depended the freedom of the United States and the Free World. The Joint Chiefs of Staff and myself are most proud of the way all branches of the service worked together during this crisis. On behalf of the American people and myself, I extend most heartfelt thanks.”
Mr. Shelton is survived by his two children, Shane Shelton and Kristan Shelton; the mother of his two children, Lynda Shelton; two brothers, James R. Shelton and Carroll Wayne Shelton and five sisters, Catherine Melton, Joyce Boyd, Linda Beck, Dorothy Frankline and Vicky Langley.
Visitation was held, Sunday, August 7 at Ashby Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, August 8 at Ashby Funeral Home with burial at New Rosemont Cemetery.
