Yellowjackets looking to host playoff game
After a tough-fought game in 6A South conference action that ended in a 34-6 loss to the Pine Bluff Zebras this past Friday, the Sheridan Yellowjackets take on the Little Rock Fair War Eagles Friday at Yellowjackets Stadium.
The Zebras (5-3, 4-1 6A South) scored 20 points in the fourth quarter on big plays to upend the Yellowjackets (4-4, 2-3).
Sheridan junior kicker Micah Parker kicked a 40-yard field goal with 11:03 left in the fourth quarter to get the Yellowjackets within 14-6 of the Zebras, but on third-and-12, Pine Bluff quarterback Jordan Humphrey threw a 67-yard touchdown pass to Walter Ashley with 9:01 left to extend the Zebras’ lead to 21-6 and Pine Bluff never looked back.
“The biggest regret I have over the Pine Bluff game was that the score was not indicative over the kind of game it was,” Sheridan Coach Louis Campbell said on sheridanfootball.com.
The Yellowjackets punted after the long TD pass and Humphrey struck again. Humphrey hit Shomari Center for a 69-yard TD to make it a 21-point lead.
After getting into Pine Bluff territory, Sheridan junior quarterback Dylan Flores threw an interception on the Yellowjackets’ next series and Zebras running back Jalen Dabner ran for a 20-yard TD to finish the scoring.
“We misplay two passes and don’t fit a run correctly and suddenly it is 34-6,” Campbell said.
“The biggest plus was that our players came to play. Their attitude and approach to the game, I have no regrets over. They competed and fought the entire game.”
Flores finished 15 of 33 for 203 yards and an interception. Senior receiver Nick Ware caught a team-high seven catchers and gained 45 yards. Senior Alec Pender had a team-high 85 yards on five catches and senior receiver Josh Miller averaged 36.5 yards on his two catches finishing with 73 yards receiving.
The Zebras outgained the Yellowjackets 309 to 284 in total yardage, but Pine Bluff had only 90 yards going into the fourth quarter. Sheridan won the first-down battle, gaining 13 to Pine Bluff’s 9.
“Statistics don’t win games, but I think it showed we competed and played well until the end on defense,” Campbell said.
Senior running back Dalton Seamon led the Yellowjackets with 49 yards on 14 carries and Flores ran seven times for 17 yards.
Sheridan takes on an 0-8 Fair team that is also 0-5 in conference on Friday, and next week play the Texarkana Razorbacks, who are 3-5 overall, but have a winning conference record at 3-2.
“Our goals these last two weeks are to go 2-0 and host a playoff game here in Sheridan for the first time in a while,” Campbell said.
Fair averages just 6.8 points per game and are giving up 42.1 points per game in its eight games played this year. Texarkana has Lake Hamilton up next and has averaged 30.8 points a game its last five games.
Hootens.com has the Yellowjackets a 22-point favorite over the winless War Eagles.
Kickoff between the Yellowjackets and War Eagles is 7 p.m. on Friday at Yellowjackets Stadium.
