GLEN ROSE — In a roller coaster of a game Thursday, the Glen Rose Lady Beavers came back to tie Central Arkansas Christian twice, and eventually win 7-6 in extra innings.
Down one run in the bottom of the seventh inning, Glen Rose sophomore Rebecca Tuggle tied the game with a solo home run.
Then, in an extra eighth inning, sophomore Heather Whitfield scored the winning run on a dropped fly ball to right field hit by senior Hollie Boles.
Glen Rose head coach Kyle Lem described his team as a “fun bunch to coach.”
“I’m proud of them,” he said. “They came on strong.”
Senior Madison Jacobs pitched all eight innings for the Lady Beavers, striking out four batters while walking two and allowing 11 hits.
Offensively, sophomore Kylie Shepherd batted three for four with two singles, a double and two runs-batted-in. Jacobs was 3-5 with one triple, two singles (one of which was a bunt) and two RBIs.
Tuggle was 1-4 with one home run and one RBI. Freshman Kendall Jacobs went 1-4 with one RBI, and senior Tiffany Houpt was 1-4 with a double.
After giving up one run to the Lady Mustangs in the first inning, Glen Rose was held scoreless for three innings, striking out seven times in three trips to the plate.
“That girl is a good pitcher,” Lem said. “She throws good stuff, and when she’s on she’s tough to hit.”
CAC put one more run on the board in the top of the fourth inning with a home run, giving the Lady Mustangs a 2-0 lead.
In the Lady Beavers’ next at bat, Shepherd hit a double, bringing in senior Hollie Boles and Houpt, tying the game 2-2.
CAC then scored one run in the fifth and two in the sixth of another home run, giving the Lady Mustangs a 5-3 lead. When the Lady Beavers made their way to the dugout after making the third out of the inning, Lem told them to keep their heads up and remain confident.
“We have to be confident and hold the rope for each other, and pick each other up,” Lem said. “I’ve got a good group of seniors this year, who are doing a great job in the leadership role, and it makes my job a lot easier.”
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Houpt scored off a single by Kendall Jacobs. Madison Jacobs then came to bat and hit a triple, scoring senior Katie Peterson and Kendall Jacobs and tying the game 5-5.
In the top of the seventh inning — the last of regulation — CAC scored a run when a ground ball hit to Houpt at shortstop was bobbled by Kendall Jacobs at first base, allowing a runner at third base to come home.
Down one run in the bottom of the seventh inning, Tuggle came to the plate and drove the ball past the center field fence, tying the game 6-6 and sending the game into extra innings.
The Lady Beaver held CAC scoreless in the top of the eighth inning, and then began the bottom of the eighth with sophomore Heather Whitfield at second base. In order to speed the game along, each team begins its at bat in extra innings with the last batter out from the previous inning on second base.
With two outs and Whitfield on third after Madison Kendall grounded out, Boles popped up to right field. What should have been the end of the inning turned into an error when the CAC right fielder dropped the ball, allowing Whitfield to score and the Lady Beavers to win 7-6.View more articles in:
