St. John Neuman (Fla) posed no problem for Bryant Monday, as the Hornets cruised to an easy 8-2 win in seven innings at Sanford, Fla. Bryant scored two runs in the third, four in the fifth and two in the sixth while St. John Neuman scored a run in the third and the sixth inning.
After giving up a run in the third, the Hornets came back in the bottom half of the inning to score two runs thanks to a passed ball and a single by Landon Pickett.
With one out, Lucas Castleberry walked and stole second before advancing to third on a ground out. A walk to Dylan Cross put runners on the corners with two outs.
Castleberry scored on a passed ball and after Hayden Daniel ran for Cross, a single by Pickett to center field would advance Daniel to third where he would later score to give Bryant a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Bryant would add four runs to increase their lead to 6-1.
Pickett would be hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Tyler Nelson walked to put two runners on with no outs. An error allowed Hayden Lessonberry to reach first and for Pickett to score. With runners on second and third, Josh Pultro would be hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Chris Joiner would reach on a fielder’s choice as Nelson would be out at home. Marcus Wilson, who was running for Lessonberry, would score on a passed ball.
Back-to-back walks with the bases loaded would score Pultro and Joiner.
In the bottom of the sixth, a sacrifice fly by Joiner scored Nelson from third and a single to right by Castleberry scored Wilson, who was running for Lessonberry, for the final runs of the game.
Cross pitched seven innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
Castleberry was 2 for 3 with a run scored, a RBI and two walks. Pickett was 2 for 3 with a run scored and a RBI. Nelson was 1 for 2 with a run and two walks while Lessonberry was 1 for 2 with a RBI.
The game was the first of the Northwest Powerade Classic and the Hornets are scheduled to play at least three more games with the final game scheduled for Friday.View more articles in:
