Benton freshman Carmen King scored a goal off an assist from Mariah Temple at the 9:29 minute mark in the first half as the Benton Lady Panthers defeated Malvern 1-0 Monday night.
“She is actually our leading scorer on the year,” coach Jason Gentry said. “She has five goals on the year and does a good job of finding the net. She controls the ball.
“Sometimes she tries to do too much but when she just focuses on striking the ball, she does a good job. It helps that she has got some pretty good players around her too.”
Angela Walker played between the posts for the Lady Panthers but did not record a save as most of the game was played at mid field where neither team really got a good shot off.
“It was very limited on shots on our end and their end,” Gentry said.
Benton improves to 4-4 (1-2) in conference. The Lady Panthers defeated Sheridan last week but has lost to Lake Hamilton and Texarkana.
Benton defeated Sheridan 3-1 with two goals and an assist from Lauren Goines and a goal from King. Walker had one save.
“That was huge,” Gentry said about the win. “After being 0-2 in conference to two pretty good teams and losing both of those games really close [Benton lost to Texarkana 5-4 in penalty kicks] .. It was a big bounce back and get a win at Sheridan.”
“They are usually always tough and we are still trying to put the pieces together and get things rolling. Hopefully we will be ready for the second half of the conference and the state tournament.”
Benton plays at El Dorado Friday night.View more articles in:
