“I don’t think there was a game played yesterday in the state,” Benton head coach Eric Ryan said Thursday morning after Wednesday’s storms postponed the scheduled game between Lake Hamilton and the Lady Panthers.
Benton (18-5, 9-1 6A South) will play at Texarkana Friday at 5 p.m. The game against Lake Hamilton has been moved to Thursday, May 5. Ryan said they considered moving the game to today, but with more bad weather expected to hit this afternoon Ryan didn’t want to risk it.
Ryan said Texarkana has really improved throughout the year and are a “scrappy bunch.”
It took extra innings for Lake Hamilton to beat the Lady ‘Backs and Sheridan escaped with a 7-6 win at Texarkana.
“If we go down there, focus and do the things we can do, we should be alright,” Ryan said.
Expected to pitch in Friday’s game is senior Jessica Smith, who is 8-2 on the year. Lauren White would have started against Lake Hamilton, and Ryan said he wanted to stick to the rotation.
“[Jessica] has good control of her pitches, and she gives the defense a chance behind her,” Ryan said. “Obviously this game means a lot to her.”
With all the schools going through the same testing and the rain out, tomorrow’s game will be the first game in a week for the Lady Panthers. Ryan said he was not worried about the long break.
“Everybody is having to deal with the break,” Ryan said. “Hopefully it makes the girls ready to play and want to play.”
Benton beat Texarkana 6-0 at home March 29.
