With three starters potentially returning to the lineup, Bauxite head coach Wes Mode hopes the Lady Miners can produce some last-minute magic at the 4A-7 District Tournament in Ashdown.
If proven to be fully recovered, returning for the Lady Miners will be junior Bethany Edwards, sophomore Allie Beech and senior Shelby Wingate.
Both Edwards, Bauxite’s starting pitcher, and Wingate, who Mode said will start at first base, have been recovering from surgery. Beech broke a bone in her pinky finger earlier this season.
“I’m hoping to have my regular starters back Friday,” Mode said. “I think we’re going to get the ‘scalpel award’ at the end of the year.”
The Lady Miners have also been without senior Jessica Tripp, who remains out for the season.
Bauxite (8-12, 2-3 4A-7) has slumped since losing its starters but will be going into the district tournament a No. 5 seed thanks in part to senior Elizabeth Harris, freshman Lexi Wells, freshman Kati Daly and senior Haley Davis, who, along with their teammates, have kept Bauxite afloat in the conference.
“We’re going to look like another team,” he said, “but I’m not so sure that’s a good thing.”
Mode said, “We’ve shown at times all year that we can hit and field. It’s just a matter of putting it all together.”
The Lady Miners will take on No. 8 seed Pulaski Academy at 5 p.m. Friday. If they win, afterward Bauxite will face No. 4 seed Ashdown.
With two wins, which will land them in the tournament semifinals, the Lady Miners will automatically advance to the 4A Regional Tournament.
Mode said his goal is to “put it together for two games.”
“That way, when we go back Saturday there won’t be any pressure,” he said.
