The Sheridan Yellowjackets defeated Texarkana 10-5 Friday night to secure the No. 3 seed in next week’s 6A State Tournament in Marion.
Zac Perkins pitched a complete game, with really one bad inning coming in the third. Two walks, two errors and a hit allowed for Texarkana to score three runs to trim the deficit to 6-3, after Sheridan had scored six runs in the bottom of the first.
In the first, Justin Willis led off with a single and moved to second on a hit-and-run by Alec Pender. Sheridan coach Mike Moore said Pender had to hold up at second because the ball was hit too sharply to move to third.
Nick Ware bunted for a hit to load the bases and a walk to Grady Finley forced in the game’s first run. Zach Perkins hit a RBI single to left to score Pender and Miller hit a fly ball to left, which the outfielder mishandled allowing a third run to score.
Lawson Easley grounded out to short but a fielder’s choice plated Finley and allowed Easley to reach. Jake Smith bunted to load the bases again and Wicker walked to force in another run.
With the bases still loaded, Pender reached on a walk to score the final run of the inning.
Sheridan scored three more runs in the fifth.
Wicker was hit by a pitch and back-to-back walks to Willis and Pender loaded the bases. Ware walked in a run and Perkins hit a sacrifice fly for a RBI.
Willis finished the game with two hits and two runs scored. Pender had a hit, three walks, scored three times and was hit by a pitch. Ware had a hit and a RBI and Finley had a hit and two RBIs.
Perkins had a hit with two RBIs while Wicker had a hit, a RBI and scored a run.
“We had a pretty balanced attack tonight,” Moore said.
The Yellowjackets will play the No. 6 seed from the 6A East Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Tilden Rogers in West Memphis.
