The Benton Sport Shop Legion baseball team defeated Lake Hamilton Tuesday 12-7 at Lake Hamilton High School.
Benton scored seven runs in the first, four in the third and one in the fourth. Lake Hamilton scored a run in the first, three in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth.
Benton had 12 runs on seven hits with three errors and Lake Hamilton had seven runs on seven hits with just one error.
“That first inning was key for us,” manager Johnny Mitchell said. “Their pitcher was throwing a lot of balls and that was what started the game.
“We got base hits at key times.”
In the first for Sport Shop, Tyler Massey and Michael Higginbotham reached on back-to-back walks. Cody Fortner followed with a single and later scored on a wild pitch. Aaron Gagen reached on an error and a run scored. Jay Davies reached on a dropped third strike and Jacob Pinkerton was hit by a pitch.
Chris Hamilton walked as did Massey. Hamilton later scores on a wild pitch and Higginbotham walked again. Fortner grounded out to end the inning.
“I think we had more errors than they did but theirs were at key times and ours didn’t hurt us,” Mitchell said. “We had a few hits that put us over there.”
With one out in the third, Chris Hamilton single and Higginbotham doubled. Fornter also singled and Matt Mitchell reached on a walk. Gagen single and Turbyfill walked. A pop up to the pitcher ended the inning.
In the fourth, Benton scored one run on a single by Pinkerton, a hit-by-pitch and a single by Massey.
Sport Shop played Lake Hamilton in a tournament at North Little Rock but lost 9-4. Mitchell said he thought that was their AA team because the team they played on Tuesday was a whole different team.
“We were kind of gunning for them,” Mitchell said. “That kind of pumped everybody up too.”
Davies pitched three innings and struck out three batters. Higginbotham finished the game, pitching one inning and striking out a batter.
Sport Shop will play Pine Bluff at home tonight.
