Benton McClendon’s Appliance Senior Legion baseball team scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Little Rock Express 8-3 Monday night on the campus of UALR.
McClendon’s scored two runs in the first, two in the second and four in the fourth, while Little Rock scored two runs in the second and one run in the third.
Ryne Besancon led off the first with a triple and Levon Steward reached on a fielder’s choice. Steward later scored on a RBI double by Chase Southworth. After a fly out, Corky Welch singled to plate Southworth.
In the second, Matt Frelin singled and Briar Sample was hit by a pitch. Besancon reached on a fielder’s choice and Steward followed with a RBI double. Southworth added a second run with a RBI single.
To begin the fourth, Welch was hit by a pitch. Austin Hicks reached on a fielder’s choice and Frelin hit a sacrifice fly to right field. Sample walked and Gene Dunkin hit a two-run double. Besancon single and stole second before Steward reached on an error that allowed for a run to score.
Dunkin pitched five innings, allowing three runs on three hits with six strikeouts and two walks. He also hit three batters. Coy Fitzhugh pitched two innings, striking out four.
Besancon was 3 for 4 with a triple and Steward was 1 for 3 with a double. Southworth was 3 for 4 with a double and Welch was 1 for 3. Frelin was 2 for 3, Gene Dunkin was 1 for 3 with a double.
McClendon’s will play Wednesday Thoman Boothe at 6:30 p.m. in the first round of pool play in the Mountain Home Tournament.
