Benton came up short Sunday in the finals of a tournament held at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, losing to Greenwood 12-0 in four innings.
The Panthers’ finals appearance came on the heels of another finals appearance of a tournament over the Fourth of July weekend in Little Rock.
Benton (16-4) beat Pulaski Academy 11-1 Friday, then won 4-0 against Fayetteville Saturday before falling to Greenwood.
Against Fayetteville, pitcher Coulton Lee only allowed four hits in his seven-inning shutout while striking out 10 and walking two.
Benton had six hits in the game and never committed an error in the field (Fayetteville had three). The Panthers scored one run in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings.
Brant Stout batted 2 of 3 with one RBI, and Jordon Britton went 2-2 with an RBI and scoring once. Justin Vincent (1-3) scored once and had one RBI, while Brooks Balisterri (1-3 with a double) and Taylor Schmidt (0-3) each scored once.
However, against Greenwood the Panthers could only muster two hits, which came from Vincent (1-2) and Lee (1-2). Greenwood had 12 hits and 12 runs, 9 of which came in the first inning followed by one in the second and two in the fourth.
After Benton failed to tack any runs onto the board in the bottom of the fourth, the game was called.
Greenwood committed one fielding error, and Benton committed two — one from Mathew Krikorian and one by Britton.
Carson Holloway started on the mound for Benton and earned the loss, pitching only 2/3 of an inning but allowing nine runs (eight earned) on six hits and five walks. He had one strikeout.
Against the 13 batters he faced, Holloway had only four first-pitch strikes.
Balisterri came in relief, pitching 3 1/3 innings and allowing three runs (all earned) on six hits with one walk.
