The Bryant Lady Hornets’ volleyball team started Spikefest 2011 on Saturday with a sweep (25-18, 25-13) of the Magnolia Lady Panthers at Little Rock Christian Academy.
Bryant followed with a split with the Little Rock Christian Lady Warriors (16-25, 28-26) and swept Little Rock Hall Lady Warriors before getting a rematch with the defending state champion Bentonville Lady Tigers in tournament play. “We started the day looking really good against Magnolia,” Bryant coach Beth Solomon said. “The girls were hitting hard and digging up almost everything.”
“We started out looking really great then had a few breakdowns,” Solomon continued. “Overall, we had a good showing.”
The Lady Hornets finished second in their pool play behind Little Rock Christian to face the Lady Tigers, but lost 22-25 and 17-25 in tournament play. Bryant lost to Bentonville in the second round of the state tournament this past year.
“It was nice to have a rematch with Bentonville with a new group and see what we’re capable of doing this year,” Solomon said.
“The girls are still working on playing together as a team. We had several selfish moments on the court, especially during the Bentonville game.”
Senior Taylor West had nine assists against Bentonville and senior Lauren Reed had six digs.
Against LR Hall, junior Hannah Rice led the team with six assists, junior Brooke Howell had five kills and Alyssa Anderson aced four serves.
Junior McKenzie Rice, Hannah Rice’s twin sister, had five kills and five digs against LR Christian and Anderson added five kills.
“It’s still early in the season and I know that things are going to click with the girls,” she said. “They’re starting to realize just what they’re capable of.”
The Lady Hornets take on the Benton Lady Panthers today, with the sophomore team playing at 4:30 p.m. at Benton.
