The Benton Lady Panther volleyball team swept Texarkana 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-20) Tuesday night to move into second place in the 6A South Conference.
“[Texarkana] is a very good team,” coach Brandy Chumley said. “But we played really well and we passed the ball well and played very well.”
In game one, Benton had 11 kills including six from junior Emily Morgan. Senior Hayley Ferguson had two, junior Alex Williams, senior Kristen Ryan and sophomore Allison Reynolds all had one kill.
Williams also had an ace.
“We didn’t miss a whole lot of serves and we didn’t make many hitting errors,” Chumley said. “Our intensity stayed up.”
In game two, the Lady Panthers had 11 kills including four from Morgan. Ryan and Ferguson had two kills. Junior Erin Jackson and Reynolds had one.
Reynolds and Williams had a double block. Junior Alicia Sandage had two aces and junior Courtland Kaufholtz had one ace.
“All year I have been preaching to them to not getting our heads down when we make a mistake,” Chumley said. “We were working as a team and playing together.
“It was a total team effort.”
In game three, Benton had 14 kills including four from Morgan and Williams. Ferguson had two, Ryan had two and Jackson and Reynolds had one.
Ryan and Jackson had a double block and Morgan had a block. Ryan also had a kill.
Benton improves to 13-7 overall and 8-2 in the 6A South. Benton is currently in second place with Sheridan in first with only one loss in conference.
The Lady Panthers play at Sheridan on Thursday.
“It is probably going to determine who is going to be conference champ,” Chumley said. “If we beat them, then we will either share it or have it to ourselves.
“It is a big game, we need to win it.”
Sheridan beat Benton in four games last time out.
“We just got to play together and be ready going into the game,” Chumley said. “We have to play smart and play hard.”
Chumley believes her ladies are up for the challenge.
“We are going in as the underdog because of our record,” Chumley said.
