The Sheridan Yellowjackets’ bid to host a first-round playoff game came to an end when they dropped a 28-21 decision to the Arkansas High Razorbacks in Texarkana on Friday night. The Yellowjackets scored 14 points in the final four minutes, but couldn’t get it done in the end.
“Too little too late,” Sheridan Coach Louis Campbell said. “We didn’t play very good on defense. We gave them 21 points. They had a fumble returned for a touchdown. That was 28 points.”
Down 28-7 after Razorbacks’ quarterback Elgie Richards hooked up with Jared Brown for a 4-yard touchdown pass at the 7:07 mark in the fourth quarter, Yellowjackets’ junior quarterback Dylan Flores threw an interception on Sheridan’s first play of the possession to give it back to Arkansas High.
The Razorbacks (4-6, 4-4 6A South) ended up punting it for 12 yards the next series and the Yellowjackets started at Arkansas High’s 38-yard line. The Yellowjackets (5-5, 3-4 6A South) got to the Razorbacks 8-yard line on first down, but two incomplete passes and a sack moved Sheridan 8 yards back to make it fourth-and-16. Flores found senior receiver Josh Miller for a 16-yard TD pass to make it 28-14 with 4:05 left in the game.
Arkansas High turned the ball over on downs and Sheridan took over at its own 26-yard line with 1:38 left in the game. A quick strike from Flores to Miller for 48 yards at the 1:09 mark got the Yellowjackets to the Razorbacks 26-yard line. Flores hit receiver Kurt Stinnett for 9 yards and a personal foul against Arkansas High moved the Yellowjackets to the 9-yard line. Flores – who finished 15 of 24 for 189 yards, three TDs and two interceptions – threw a 9-yard TD to senior receiver Nick Ware to make it a 28-21 game with 43 seconds left.
The Razorbacks recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock to end the game.
“I’m proud of the kids the way they came back, Campbell said. “They did score twice late in the game and had a chance at an onside kick to tie it. They fought hard, they came back, but early in the game, we just didn’t play very good.”
Arkansas High scored in the first quarter when Richards hit Trustin Cleveland with a 4-yard TD pass to make it 7-0 at the 2:31 mark.
Sheridan drove to the Razorbacks’ 22-yard line in the second quarter, but Micah Parker’s 39-yard field goal was no good with just under 10 minutes left in the half.
The Yellowjackets made their opponents punt on the next series and drove to the Razorbacks’ 10-yard line, but Flores fumbled the ball and Christopher Stewart returned it 88 yards for a TD to put Arkansas High up 14-0, which was the score at halftime.
“They had the momentum and made the most of it,” Campbell said. “We gave up three turnovers. Hard to beat anybody like that. Not any magic to it. Just bottom line.”
Sheridan got within 14-7 at the 6:50 mark in the third quarter when Flores hit Miller with a 13-yard TD pass. Miller had a big game catching nine passes for 152 yards and two TDs.
“He played well tonight,” Campbell said of Miller. “I don’t remember anything bad he did. He played well.”
Arkansas High would answer, though, as Richards threw a 17-yard TD pass to Ke’Darious Grissom to make it a 14-point game.
“They did a better job, bottom line,” Campbell said.
