The Bauxite Miners had a three-run lead going into the last inning and held on to defeat the Magnet Cove Panthers 3-2 in non-conference action on Monday night in Bauxite.
“We went into the top of the seventh 3-0 and [Magnet Cove] scratched and clawed back into it,” Bauxite Coach Michael Mattox said. “We walked a couple guys, they got a couple hits here and there. They had the tying run at third base with one out.”
That’s when senior Ryan Weng relieved for starter Tim Dunlap and picked the runner off at third base for the second out, and induced a ground out to get the win and the save. Dunlap got the win pitching six and one-third innings, giving up the two runs in the seventh. Dunlap surrendered five hits and walked three Panthers, but struck out nine.
“We battled hard to finish it out and win it, but at the same time, when you go into the seventh with a three-run lead, you would like to finish it off that way,” Mattox said.
The Miners (4-3) scored two runs in the third inning and one run in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead helped by RBIs from senior leadoff man Hunter Wray and sophomore Ethan Hendrix. Hendrix finished with two hits, going 2 for 2 with a double and Wray went 1 for 3 with a double. Junior catcher Tyler Willis went 1 for 2 for the three players accounting for all four of Bauxite’s hits.
The Miners take on Harmony Grove in Haskell on Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.View more articles in:
