BAUXITE – After losing their previous two games, the Bauxite Miners picked up a 4-2 win over the Episcopal Wildcats in non-conference play on Thursday in Bauxite. The Miners received good fundamental play, pitching and defense to hold on for the win.
“We were real solid on defense and we bunted the ball real well,” Bauxite Coach Michael Mattox said. “We got two great bunts from our three-hole hitter and we got another good bunt from Blake Yates and that’s what got us going.”
The Miners (9-11, 2-4 7-4A) scored three of their four runs in the first inning and got a good pitching performance from senior Dylan Oliver. Oliver pitched all seven innings giving up two runs on four hits. He walked one, hit two batters and struck out five.
“I would have liked to see us get a few more runs down the stretch and put it away, but Dylan Oliver did an exceptional job on the mound,” Mattox said. “He hadn’t pitched in a while and he threw a good game. He worked ahead in the count, got leadoff hitters out and did what we expected him to do.”
Oliver also had a good day at the plate going 2 for 2 with a sacrifice bunt. Senior shortstop Hunter Wray also went 2 for 3 with a run while Sean Beesly went 1 for 2 with an RBI and junior Chris Revas went 1 for 2 with a run. Sophomore Easton Alarcon and junior Tyler Willis each went 1 for 3 with a run scored.
“Hopefully we can get a little momentum,” Mattox said about going into the District Tournament which starts Wednesday in Malvern.
The Miners were scheduled to play conference opponent Ashdown at home on Friday. If it is rained out, Bauxite, which was scheduled to play Harmony Grove on Monday, will play Ashdown instead.View more articles in:
