The Bryant School District will host the third annual Dash for a Difference 5K Fun Run/Walk and Kid's 1 mile at 9 a.m. Sat., May 5 at Bryant Middle School.
Sponsored by Arkansas Bone and Joint, proceeds from this year's race will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Bryant.
Boys and Girls Clubs nationwide have experienced a drastic reduction in federal funding.
"When they lost the $100,000 of federal TANF funds due to government cut backs earlier this year, we knew they needed the support of their community more than ever before," Jessica Bollen, race director, said.
"Each day, the club works to inspire young people to reach their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens," Bollen said. "With over 50 percent of the 500 students in grades K-8 attending on scholarship, they need our support."
In 2011, the Dash generated more than $5,500 for the Rotary Club of Bryant's Kid's Kloset, and in 2010, $3,500 was collected for the American Red Cross.
According to Bollen, participants wanting to run as a family, a family maximum registration fee is offered, meaning a single family's total registration fee will max at $50.
"Online registration is not available for this option. A paper form must be completed for each family member and submitted as a group with a single $50 payment," Bollen said.
The course will begin and end on the main Bryant campus (in the large parking lot between Bryant Middle School and Hornet Stadium). The race will start at 9 a.m., with check-in at 8 a.m.
"The event is a fun run/walk, and all ages and abilities are welcome. Strollers and wheelchairs are also welcome," Bollen said. Arkansas Runner will be electronically timing both races. Awards will be given to each gender in the follow categories: Overall, 0-9, 10-14, 15-19, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60+.
Every child who participates in the Kid's 1 Mile event will receive a medal. The coveted "Spirit in Sole" trophy will also be presented to the school with the highest percentage of participants, and the Spirit Stick will be given to the most spirited team.
Approximately 350 runners participated last year, according to Bollen.
"We'd love to beat that this year. It's a great race with lots of energy and spirit, and we have lots of families come out and run together, which I love," Bollen said. "It's the Kid's 1 mile event that really makes this event special. Seeing the kids get so hyped-up to run is fun for everyone, and then handing them their medals as they finish is personally the highlight of the whole morning to me."
