The Bryant Lady Hornets hosted the Little Rock Fair War Eagles on Thursday night in 7A/6A South conference action and came up with their seventh sweep in eight conference games, with the Benton Lady Panthers being the only team to take conference undefeated Bryant to more than three games. Bryant won 3-0 (25-11, 25-9, 25-9) against Fair at Bryant gym.
“I’m proud of the girls,” Bryant Coach Beth Solomon said of her team. “We played better than the last time we played them; as far as not playing down and trying to stay at our level.”
Heavily favored, the Lady Hornets (12-3, 8-0 South) didn’t start out like they were the team supposed to win. The Lady Eagles, 0-8 in the South conference, started on a 4-0 run as Bryant began the first set with two hits out of bounds, a net call and were aced.
The Lady Hornets would score 6 of the next 7 points to take at one-point lead capped by senior Courtney Davidson’s kill. Fair would take a 7-6 lead, but senior Lady Hornet McKenzie Rice started a 9-0 run with a kill.
Senior Britten Hays, seeing her first action in several weeks when she was out with a leg injury, had three aces during the run. “We’re going to ease her back it in,” Solomon said of Hays. “She’s moving pretty good. Hopefully she’s going to continue to improve and get back in there for us.
The run was capped by senior Kaylon Wilson’s kill from a Hannah Rice set to take a 15-7 lead. Bryant would score the last five points of the match with McKenzie Rice spiking it down on Fair’s 10-foot line with authority to end it.
The Lady Hornets would get down 2-0 in Game 2 before a Fair error gave Bryant a point which started another 9-0 run capped by senior Alyssa Anderson’s kill from Hannah Rice’s set. Senior Brooke Howell had four aces during the run. Bryant would lead 11-7 before another Lady Eagles error started a 10-0 run capped by an Anderson ace to make it 21-7.
Unlike the first two games, Bryant started the third set ahead. The Lady Hornets took advantage of Fair’s four unforced errors to go up 7-0. Hannah Rice would have four aces in a row during a 5-0 run to make it 12-1 and Bryant would go up 20-3 after an 8-0 run capped by a Davidson block.
The Lady Hornets had 25 aces for the match led by Howell’s nine and Hannah Rice’s six. McKenzie Rice had nine kills for the team lead followed by Davidson’s seven and Howell’s six. Hannah Rice had 23 assists for the team lead, and Anderson and sophomore Abby Staton each had five digs.
“We worked on our serves; our serves looked good tonight,” Solomon said. “They got to kind of take it easy and we’ll start working forward to Texarkana on Tuesday.”
Bryant will travel to Texarkana to take on the Lady Razorbacks (4-3 South) on Tuesday night.
