The Christmas holiday season is often referred to as the season of giving. As 58-year-old Derrell Hill is confined to a bed at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, family and friends pray there are enough giving people to help fund a liver transplant for the Saline County native.
"During this difficult time, he spends as much time as possible with his six children, 10 grandchildren and other family and friends who all means so much to him," a family member said.
The family has set up a donation page at the National Foundation for Transplants website, www.patients.transplants.org . Once on the website, click the Find An NFT Patient link and type in Derrell Hill to link to the donation page. The fundraising goal is to reach $25,000.
"The average liver transplant costs approximately $550,000. And that’s only the beginning," Hill's donation page reads. "Even though his health insurance will cover the transplant itself, he faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications, which are as critical to his survival of the transplant."
Hill was diagnosed with a a life-threatening liver disease in 2007 and doctors informed him that a liver transplant is essential to his survival.
"He enjoyed his career as a Master Electrician, and he even taught apprentices, but his declining health forced him to stop working, adding to the financial strain," the webpage reads. "He loves riding motorcycles and watching car races, but these days he doesn’t get to enjoy these activities very often because he’s often too tired. After receiving a transplant, he looks forward to regaining his independence and feeling healthy again."
On the webpage, there is link to make a tax-deductible donation for Hill. Donations also can be mailed to NFT Arkansas Transplant Fund, 5350 Poplar Avenue, Suite 430, Memphis, TN 38119. Be sure to write "in honor of Derrell Hill" on the memo line.
The family also is designing special donation T-shirts in honor of Hill. T-shirt orders and more information are available by calling Joshua Hill at 501-658-4911 or by contacting him via email at firstname.lastname@example.org .
