Bauxite employees paid; council adds Brooks to signatory list

Bauxite employees received their payroll checks Friday after emergency action was taken by the City Council in a 4 p.m. special session.

In the emergency meeting, the aldermen approved returning Alderman Karen Brooks as a signatory on all city bank accounts.

Brooks had been removed as a signatory during an Aug. 7 special meeting after she said she no longer wanted to sign checks because she suspected illegal activity.

All of the aldermen were present, but Mayor Johnny McMahan did not attend. Recorder/treasurer Candice Holliday presided in the meeting.

Additionally, the council approved adding Holliday as a signatory on all city accounts.

Brooks said Don Zimmerman, executive director of the Arkansas Municipal League, suggested that she remain a third signatory on the accounts in case of an emergency. Brooks agreed to remain on the signatory list in case Holliday has an emergency and is unable to sign checks.

Brooks signed all payroll checks immediately following the meeting, providing the necessary second signature that facilitated paying Bauxite employees.

The mayor is the first signatory on all city checks.
