Benton sweeps boys, girls doubles competition

The Benton Panther tennis team swept Texarkana in doubles competition Tuesday afternoon at Tyndall Park.
Benton seniors Ian McMahn and Dudley Stow defeated Texarkana’s Flowers and Hemperley 8-6. Seniors Sam Anderson and Jake Jakonczuk defeated Texarkana’s Brock and Gregory 8-2.
Seniors Nathan Perry and Clint Powell defeated Flowers and Hemperley 8-4.
In singles competition, senior Eric Emmons defeated Tanner McClean 8-4 while senior Austin Willis defeated Devonte Murphy 8-1.
Sophomore Trey Young lost to McClean 1-8.
Willis earned the No. 1 seed overall in next week’s conference tournament. Emmons earned the No. 3 seed.
The tournament begins Wednesday at noon with the semifinals beginning Thursday at 9 a.m. at Rebsamen Park in Little Rock.
“The rankings and the seeds are fun to look at,” coach Justin Warner said. “The kids like it because it shows they see their hard work reward, with the seeds that they’ve earned.
“But as far as who wins the tournament, it doesn’t mean anything.”
McMahn and Stow earned the No. 1 overall doubles team and Anderson and Stow earned the No. 3 seed.
In girls singles competition, senior Malika Akbar defeated Lily Smith 8-2 and senior Lauren Dudley defeated Texarkana’s Kristin Chivers 8-1.
Leigha Stone lost to her opponent 5-8.
Akbar earned the No. 3 seed for the conference tournament and Dudley earned the No. 4 seed.
In doubles competition, seniors Emily Parker and Any Jivan defeated Texarkana’s Davis and Price 8-6. Sophomore Abby McAtee and senior Mariah Temple defeated Texarkana’s Schanoo and Green 8-1.
Jivan and Parker and Temple and McAtee earned the No. 1 and No. 2 seed in the tournament.
“If they all do the absolute best that they can, then I think no matter what, they come off winners,” Warner said.
The top six teams out of the conference tournament for both singles and doubles competition will advance to the state tournament in Jonesboro.
