Bryant places 2nd in tourney

The Bryant Lady Hornets volleyball team competed in the Lady Cyclone Tournament in Russellville over the weekend and though they fell just short of a first-place finish, the Lady Hornets still had a successful tournament.
“We came home with a second-place finish,” Bryant Coach Beth Solomon said. “I'm proud of that. I told the girls that we got out of this tournament what we needed.  I'm sad that we didn't win that last game, but the girls fought hard that game.  We needed this.  We needed to see this higher-level play that is more like what our postseason play will look like.”
The Lady Hornets split with Alma 1-1 (25-17, 17-25) beat Central Arkansas Christian 2-0 (25-18, 25-12) and tied Waldron 1-1 in pool play (22-25, 25-24). Bryant received a No. 3 seed and got a bye in the first round before beating Cabot 2-1 (25-19, 16-25, 15-8) in the second round. The Lady Hornets then edged Russellville 2-1 (25-20, 14-25, 16-14) before losing to Mount Saint Mary’s 2-1 (18-25, 25-23, 9-15) “in a hard-fought three games,” according to Solomon.
Senior hitter McKenzie Rice has been sidelined with a shoulder injury, but the Lady Hornets have been getting good production from junior Aubree Allen in her stead.
“Aubree Allen stepped up for the team big time this weekend,” Solomon said. “Since McKenzie Rice's shoulder injury she's stepped in as our second outside hitter and proved to be one of our best servers on Saturday.
“We're hoping to get McKenzie back this week.  Erica Smith also came in and played for us Saturday and got us some key blocks we needed.”
It will be just in time as Bryant will take on El Dorado tonight in Bryant before playing arch rival Benton at Benton Arena on Thursday.
