Bryant Sport Shop holds on

BRYANT – The Bryant Sport Shop Black Sox Jr. team gave up two hits in defeating Hot Springs Village 5-2 on Wednesday night in Bryant.

“It was a good win,” Bryant Coach Tyler Pickett said. “We didn’t look as sharp as we have been. I think that had to do with the long weekend.”

Sport Shop played three games this past weekend in a tournament in Paragould, Ark., which along with the three games, the drive north to Paragould is over 3 hours long. The Sox went 2-1 in the tournament defeating Paragould 13-1, committing 10 errors in a 7-6 loss to Dyersburg, Miss., and coming back to defeat Cooter, Mo., 7-6.

Bryant starting pitcher Andrew Kinkaid gave up just one hit, but walked seven in the HSV win.

“He did a great job of making the pitches when he absolutely had to,” Pickett said. “We just got to work on getting to where he doesn’t have to make those pitches as often.”

Kincaid finished with the win and didn’t give up a run. He struck out three in five and a third innings. Tre’ Davis relieved Kincaid in the sixth inning and gave up two unearned runs while giving up one hit and a walk.

“Andrew threw a great game and Tre’ came in right behind him and finished out the game throwing strikes and we’re headed in the right direction,” Pickett said.

Sport Shop (7-5) got things going in the bottom of the first inning when Drew Tipton reached on an infield single and stole second base. Tipton scored on C.J. Phillips’ RBI single to put the Black Sox up 1-0.

Bryant’s Blake Patterson was hit by a pitch with one out in the bottom of the third inning and stole second base. Patterson went to third on an error and scored an unearned run when he crossed home plate on a passed ball to put Sport Shop up 2-0.

The Sox scored another unearned run in the fifth before getting a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth from Weston Jones which one-hopped the left-center field wall to score Hunter Oglesby and Jimbo Seale.

“He absolutely crushed it,” Pickett said of Jones’ hit. “His swing has come a long way and it’s only going to get better.

“We still have some things we have to work on, but overall I thought we played real well. We picked it up toward the end of the game.”

Jones went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, Seale had two of the Black Sox five hits going 2 for 3 with a run, and Tipton, Phillips and Justin Emmerling each went 1 for 3.

Sport Shop will host Ashdown at Bryant High School for a doubleheader which begins at noon. Second game is slated for 2 p.m.
