DAVIS: Spending Christmas in Heaven

By Brent Davis

I see the countless Christmas trees
Around the world below,
With tiny lights like Heavens stars
Reflecting in the snow.

The sight is so spectacular
Please wipe away the tears
For I’m spending Christmas
With Jesus Christ this year

I hear the many Christmas songs
That people hold so dear
But earthly music cant compare
With the Christmas choir up here

I have no words to tell you
The joy their voices bring
For its beyond description
To hear the angels sing

I know how much you miss me,
Trust God and have no fear
For I’m spending Christmas
With Jesus Christ this year

I can’t tell you of the splendor
Or the peace here in this place
Can you imagine Christmas
With our savior, face to face

May God uplift your spirit
As I tell him of your love
Then pray for one another
As you lift your eyes above

So let your hearts be joyful
And let your spirits sing
For I’m spending Christmas in Heaven
And I’m walking with the king.

The author of this poem is unknown to me, however the words will stay with me forever. During the week before Christmas five years ago, this poem came to me in a simple brown envelope which I had pulled from the mailbox on the road in front of my home. I parked my car in the driveway and opened the envelope. As I read the words of the poem, I began to cry. My father had died three months prior and during the rush of getting things done, I had not grieved. The comfort the letter provided allowed my pain to release at the perfect time.
I thought of this poem recently as news of the school shooting in Connecticut brought the nation to its knees and shook its security to the core. Friends and family are facing a first Christmas without loved ones so cherished.
Let us all take the time to remember those who are dealing with grief this time of year and make sure they are not forgotten as well.
All of us at The Saline Courier wish everyone a very Merry Christmas.
