Elizabeth (Bettye) Poindexter Smithers

Elizabeth (Bettye) Poindexter Smithers, 86, longtime Benton resident, passed away on Monday, August 29, after a courageous battle with Lung Disease.  Bettye was born on August 21, 1925 in Magazine, to the late Edward Judson and Blanche Ellington Poindexter, moving to Booneville during her adolescent years.  She graduated from Ouachita Baptist University, where she was voted College Beauty, member of W.C.F. Social Club and Homecoming Queen her Senior year, having met the love of her life,  football player, Clomer Dyer Smithers.  Upon graduation, she taught Speech and English in Benton.  Bettye and Clomer along with his brother, Reece and wife, Mary opened Smither’s Furniture.  From there, they went on to develop Military Plaza with their friends, Betty and Bob Hardin.  Bettye also worked at the Arkansas State Legislation as a Proof Reader when it was in session, member of the Benton Garden Club, First Baptist Church for 62 years, enjoyed Bridge Club, Golf, Tennis and particularly cooking and entertaining, trying new recipes for her Dinner Parties.  Above all, her family was her top priority and it always showed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Clomer D. Smithers, sisters, Katherine Poindexter and Hallie (Judy) Fulmer, a grandson, Charles Michael Smithers and longtime loyal Companion, Yorkshire Terrier, Muffin.
She is survived by a son, Charles Dyer Smithers and wife, Paula of Benton; a daughter, Katherine Dortch and husband, Bill of Little Rock; four grandchildren, Brian Sowell and wife, Cristy, Will Dortch and Fiancée’, Kadie Weum, Allison Lawton and husband, Emory and Susan Shelton, seven great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Graveside Memorial Services by Ashby Funeral Home will be Saturday, Sept. 3, 10 a.m. at Fowler Cemetery with Dr. Rick Grant officiating.
Visitation will be at Ashby Funeral Home, Friday,Sept. 2, 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.
The family would like to thank her caregivers, Bernetia Ashley, Jordan Ashley, Doris Moore, Saline Memorial Hospice Home Care, Virginia Strickland, R.N. and Sara Mejia, and Dr. Mark Martindale.
