Errors ruin Bauxite's chances

DEQUEEN – The Bauxite Miners dropped a 6-5 decision to the DeQueen Leopards on Friday night in 7-4A conference play in DeQueen.

Down 6-2 going into the seventh inning, the Miners (8-10, 2-4 7-4A) scored three runs in the top of the seventh, but fell just short.

“We had the tying run at second and the winning run at first,” Bauxite Coach Michael Mattox said of the last inning. “We had the double steal on, and on the same pitch, we struck out to end the game. We were hoping for a throw there to see what happened, but we didn’t get one.”

Sophomore Ethan Hendrix hit a one-out single to start the seventh and junior Chad Jolly was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Junior leadoff man Chris Revas singled to load the bases and Hendrix scored to make it 6-3 DeQueen on senior Hunter Wray’s groundout. Junior Tyler Willis followed with a two-run single to get within one and sophomore Blake Yates singled before the strikeout to end the game.

Senior Ryan Weng started for the Miners, but struggled giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks, while striking out three. Wray relieved for Weng in the fourth and gave up an unearned run on two hits and struck out one in three innings. Bauxite’s defense didn’t help its pitchers out though.

“It was a pretty good game, we just made one too many errors,” Mattox said. “I had us for three errors and they were costly.”

The Miners took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Revas doubled to lead the game off. Revas was sacrifice bunted to third by Wray, and Willis had an RBI groundout to second base. DeQueen, though, countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Revas scored twice for the Miners while going 2 for 3 with a walk. Willis went 1 for 4 with three RBIs and Yates went 2 for 4 with a run. Bauxite was outhit 9 to 6 and made the only three errors in the game.

“We struggled at the plate until we got some timely hits at the end,” Mattox said. “I feel like we’re really close there. We’re not striking out. We’re hitting the ball. We’re just hitting it right at people. We’re improving, but we’re just waiting for it to be our turn.”

The Miners will play Benton’s junior varsity today at 4:30 in Bauxite.
