Softball: Benton to face Greenbrier at home

After defeating El Dorado 14-2 Friday, the Benton Lady Panthers will face Greenbrier, the defending 5A State Champions, today at home if it doesn’t get rained out first.

“They are a very good ball club,” coach Eric Ryan said. “We will be tested today but games like today is what is going to make us better.”
Expected to pitch today is Lauren White, who pitched against Greenbrier last year.

“She had a very good outing against them and has really come along this year,” Ryan said. “She has shown more maturity this year and she has good control of her pitches on the mound.”

The Lady Panthers defeated El Dorado after scoring three in the first, four in the third, five in the fourth and two in the fifth. El Dorado scored one in the third and one in the fifth.

Jessica Smith pitched all five innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk.

Tiffani Pledger was 2-4 with a double, Kori Parker was 2-3 with a double and a RBI and Kara Franlin was 3-4 with three doubles and a RBI.

Hailey Durham hit her second home run of the season and knocked in four RBIs. Bailey LeVart was 3-3 with a double and three RBIs while Jessica Hardig was 2-4 with a double and a RBI.

All together, Benton tallied 16 hits against El Dorado.

“That is one of the top hitting games this year,” Ryan said. “The girls stepped on the field motivated and when we got runners on, we got hits.”

Today’s game against Greenbrier is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start. As of press time today, the game had yet to be canceled.
