SOFTBALL: Lady Hornets get revenge, advance to semis with win

The Lady Hornets knocked off the defending 5A State Champions Friday in the Tournament of Champions held in North Little Rock.

Bryant, the defending 7A Champions, beat Greenbrier 1-0 thanks to a solo home run by junior Jessie Taylor, her third on the season.
Bryant head coach Debbie Clark said, “It was a really good game. We faced a great pitcher.”

Bryant (5-1, 1-0 7A Central) now faces the winner of Friday night’s matchup between Searcy and Foreman. The Lady Hornets play in the tournament semifinal game at 10:15 a.m. today at Burns Park.

Junior Peyton Jenkins held Greenbrier scoreless, striking out six batters and allowing three hits.

In fact, Clark said the Lady Hornets’ defense didn’t allow a Greenbrier runner to reach third base all game.

After losing badly to White Hall on Monday, Jenkins pitched strong in Byrant’s win against Little Rock Central on Thursday. Clark said Friday’s win gave Jenkins a boost of confidence.

“She said to me, ‘Coach, I’m back,’ and I said, ‘You were never gone,’” Clark said, laughing. “She pitched well, and we played great defense.”
Offensively, Taylor’s home run in the third inning was the only score the Lady Hornets would get.

“We had a lot of players who took their time looking and went down swinging,” Clark said.

Greenbrier was one of two teams who handed the Lady Hornets a loss last year during their championship run.

“My girls wanted this bad, and needed this mentally,” Clark said. “It was like a B12 shot in the arm.”
